Summary

Significance: Built as a typical Connecticut farm house of the later eighteenth century by Revolutionary War hero Deacon Joseph Mather, the house has remained in the Mather family and contains many original fittings and furnishings. It is especially noteworthy for having been the summer home from 1907 to 1930 of Stephen Tyng Mather, 1867-1930, the founder of the National Park Service and its first Director from 1917 to 1929. The house was declared a Registered National Historic Landmark in 1964.
