Summary

Following the Easter Rising, British Army soldiers are about to search a car that they've stopped on Mount Street Bridge over the Grand Canal, in an area of Dublin that had seen fierce and prolonged fighting...The car registration is RI 2987. (Dublin registered - RI 1 to 9999 ran from December 1903 to April 1921). According to the Irish Motor Directory and Motorists' Annual for 1915-16, the owner of RI 2987 was Frank D. Mockler, Dunavara, Lucan. Think that the label on the trunk at the back may be a White Star Line label...Great array of posters in the background for Bass, the Coliseum Theatre, the Tivoli and the Empire, and for Kennedy's Bread...Note also the frame of one of the Ringsend gasometers at top left. So this photo was not taken early in the morning as the inner cylinder is down (i.e. not full of gas)...If you stood at this spot today, the scene (structurally) would be almost unchanged.....To get some flavour of the atmosphere in Dublin at the time, have a look at this ( yournlireland/5719762686/in/set-72157626594879239 ) ...Date: Early May 1916..NLI Ref.: INDH23 ( vtls000235734 )

The automobile was first invented and perfected in Germany and France in the late 1890s. Americans quickly came to dominate the automotive industry after WWI. Throughout this initial era, the development of automotive technology was rapid. Hundreds of small manufacturers competing to gain the world's attention. Key developments included the electric ignition system, independent suspension, and four-wheel brakes. Transmissions and throttle controls were widely adopted and safety glass also made its debut. Henry Ford perfected mass-production techniques, and Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler emerged as the “Big Three” auto companies by the 1920s. Car manufacturers received enormous orders from the military during World War II, and afterward automobile production in the United States, Europe, and Japan soared.

Images from our photo collections that show those magnificent men (and women) in their flying, choo choo-ing, and driving machines... Oh, and we've cheated, we're adding boats and ships, jaunting cars and carriages, trams too and bicycles - we're completely shameless. So, basically any form of transport - air, sea, land - with the exception of two human feet...
