description

Summary

A Stereo Pairs image today and a fine example of how a typo by a cataloguer can send the innocent researcher off on a wild good chase. This time into the waves of the Irish Sea :) "Frederick, east of Belfast" is of course "Frederick, Earl of Belfast". I look forward to seeing what we can find out about the said Frederick and his statue?..Bernard Healy ( /photos/bernardhealy/ ) , BeachcomberAustralia ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) , B-59 ( /photos/66311327@N05/ ) and others confirm that the statue was in memory of Frederick Richard Chichester, Earl of Belfast ( https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Chichester,_Frederick_Richard_(DNB00) ) (1827-1853). And that it was removed in the 1874. Suggesting that this image was perhaps captured in the very late 1860s or early 1870s.......Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton..Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence..Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883. Certainly before c.1874. Likely late 1860s to early 1870s...NLI Ref: STP_0386 ( vtls000563701 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
