Station Master Nolan standing in front of Lord Maude's private waiting room, Dundrum, Co. Tipperary.
A rare visit these days to the O'Dea collection and to Dundrum in County Tipperary. I never heard of Lord Maude before - nor his private waiting room! Imagine the grandeur of that? "This way my Lord, your private waiting room awaits you. The rest of you can go down the platform!" :-)..With thanks in particular today to sharon.corbet ( /photos/[email protected]/ ) , Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) , Carol Maddock ( /photos/[email protected]/ ) , and beachcomberaustralia ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) for filling in the blanks, we have learned that "Lord Maude" was Cornwallis Maude, 1st Earl de Montalt and Viscount Hawarden ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornwallis_Maude,_1st_Earl_de_Montalt ) . And that the reason he received his own private waiting area from the railway company was by way of "pay off" ( http://www.seamusjking.com/Articles Full/Between_Lord_Hawarden_Dundrum_House_Hotel.html ) for allocating 22 miles of free passage to the GS&WR through his (extensive) lands. An arrangement which also seemingly explains why the Dublin-Cork line runs via Dundrum and Limerick Junction, rather tthe perhaps more direct "crow flies" route via Cashel and Mitchelstown.......Photographer: James P.
