Somerset Dam during construction, 1949
Somerset Dam was constructed between 1935 and 1959, with work being suspended during World War II. Concrete work was completed in 1953 and all construction was completed in time for the official opening of the dam by premier Nicklin in 1959. The dam is situated on the Stanley River approximately 220 km upstream from the mouth of the Brisbane River.
