Souda Bay, Crete, Greece (Jan. 01, 2003) Sailors and Marines enjoy a guided tour of the Gouverneto Monastery. The tour is one of many sponsored by the Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department aboard Naval Support Activity, Souda Bay. The Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries on the island of Crete, dating back to around 1537. During the Greek Revolution of 1821 Turkish invaders sacked the monastery, and completely destroying the monasterys archives. Then, during World War II, the monastery was heavily damaged when Nazi forces invaded the island and established a guardhouse there. The Truman and Carrier Air Wing Three are on regularly scheduled deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
