The tour is one of many sponsored by the Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department aboard Naval Support Activity, Souda Bay. The Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries on the island of Crete, dating back to around 1537. Then, during World War II, the monastery was heavily damaged when Nazi forces invaded the island and established a guardhouse there.
