Society of Friends Meetinghouse, Fair Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
Summary
Significance: Old landmark associated with important history of Quakers on Nantucket and first building owned by the Nantucket Historical Association. The Society of Friends' Meeting House is a typical mid-19th century building designed for assembly purposes. Built in 1838 as a Friend's school, it originally consisted of two floors, one for girls and one for boys. In 1864 a large meeting house to the south was sold and removed, and the school building converted into a meeting house. The second floor was removed except for a portion at the east, and the "high seats of the elders" were moved to the present building from the old. It is preserved by the Nantucket Historical Association.
