Tenniel's cartoon was published in Punch shortly after the deaths of King Humbert the First of Italy and Queen Victoria's fourth-born child, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert. King Humbert's assassination by an Italian anarchist, deeply shocked the world, as did the death of Prince Alfred who died of heart failure.
