Siasconset Neighborhood Study, Broadway, Shell, New, Center & Front Streets & Pump Square, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
Summary
Significance: Siasconset began in 1676 as a fishing village on Nantucket's east shore. Fishermen, often using material salvaged from shipwrecks or other buildings, added shed-roofed warts to their one room shacks. This casual juxtaposition of buildings and the intimate scale of the streetscape created a unique neighborhood. In the late eighteenth century Siasconset began to evolve into a summer resort community as families moved in to enjoy its quaint charm and mild climate.
