Summary

Sgt. Jeffrey Lovelace, a martial arts instructor, demonstrates a technique on Staff Sgt. Dallas Jones, a drill instructor from Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, during a practice session July 16, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Lovelace, a 26-year-old native of Fairmont, Neb., and Jones, a 20-year-old native of Augusta, Ga., demonstrated techniques before the recruits practiced on their own. Recruits must earn their tan belts, the first belt level in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, in order to graduate. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
