Summary
Significance: The wood Craftsman housing designs show a conscious response to popular and regional architectural styles, and to the tropical environment of the site. These houses at Schofield combine some of the refined Craftsman-style details with the single-wall, board-and-batten construction typical in Hawaii. Moreover, the pitched roofs, open courtyard, and large screened areas of the housing allowed the quarters to benefit from the tropical climate.
