Schofield Barracks Military Reservation, Corner-Entry Single-Family Housing Type, Between Bragg & Grime Streets near Williston Avenue, Wahiawa, Honolulu County, HI

Significance: The wood Craftsman housing designs show a conscious response to popular and regional architectural styles, and to the tropical environment of the site. These houses at Schofield combine some of the refined Craftsman-style details with the single-wall, board-and-batten construction typical in Hawaii. Moreover, the pitched roofs, open courtyard, and large screened areas of the housing allowed the quarters to benefit from the tropical climate. These houses represent an early recognition by the Army of the need for regional variations. From 1890 until 1917 the Army's Quartermaster General had produced and used standardized plans throughout the mainland United States. The Army's standard houses up until 1917 were generally two-story structures. These Hawaii bungalows, designed in the Honolulu Office of the Constructing Quartermaster, demonstrate an early acceptance by the Army of one-story houses, at least for posts in warm climates.
