Newport News was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Newport News, Virginia. The contract to build the boat was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on April 19, 1982 and its keel was laid down on March 3, 1984.
