PACIFIC OCEAN (Feb. 22, 2009) Sailors from the "Argonauts" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 147 conduct preflight checks on an F/A-18E Super Hornet on the flight deck aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
