Royal Navy and U.S. Army personnel work on a damaged Royal Navy Sea King Mk4 helicopter to prepare it for loading on the Russian Antonev AN-124-100 "Ruslan" (NATO code name "Condor") in the background. The Sea King sheared its tail rotor as a result of a hard landing on the Fort Bragg, N.C. reservation while participating in Exercise PURPLE STAR (Combined Joint Task Force 96 individual commands used their own code names for the exercise). The U.S. Army units used Exercise "ROYAL DRAGON"; U.S. Air Force units used Exercise "BIG DROP III" as their code name, while the 17,000 British forces involved used Exercise "PURPLE STAR."
