Robert Turnbull Macpherson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 20 December 1814. The son of a solicitor, he grew up in a family of artists and musicians. Macpherson showed an early talent for drawing and painting and pursued his interest in art by studying at the Royal Scottish Academy. In the 1840s Macpherson became interested in photography and began to experiment with the new medium. He quickly became one of Scotland's leading photographers and was renowned for his portraits of prominent members of Scottish society. Macpherson's photographs were highly regarded for their technical excellence and artistic merit. He was particularly adept at capturing the character and personality of his subjects and his portraits are considered some of the finest examples of early photographic portraiture. In addition to his work as a photographer, Macpherson continued to paint throughout his career. He was renowned for his landscapes and seascapes, often featuring dramatic skies and atmospheric effects. Macpherson died in Edinburgh on 5 January 1872. His legacy as a pioneering photographer and accomplished artist is still celebrated today.
