Summary
Significance: Soon after its founding in 1899, the Republic Iron and Steel Company acquired the existing Haselton blast furnace and subsequently built four blast furnaces. These blast furnaces produced pig iron for the company's Bessemer (and later, open hearth) steel-making facility on the opposite side of the Mahoning River.
