Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Religion is free in Japan, and in the religious world there is conspicuous friendliness between the members of different creeds and sects.
Shinto (the Way of the Gods) is the ancient native cult. It is divided into thirteen officially recognized sects. Shintoism originated in the combined spirit of ancestor worship and Imperial veneration and centers in its shrines. In 1924 there were 171,725 such shrines and priests to the number of 14,900. Buddhism had in the same year 71,750 temples, 181,100 priests and about fifty million followers. There are twelve sects or denominations embracing Christianity, with a total of 865 churches and a membership of 126,233."
