Relacion de las ceremonias ... de los Indios de la provencia de Mechoacan,
Summary
In his prologue, the author says his intent in writing the book was "to conduct an investigation among these new Christians to determine what had been the nature of their beliefs, customs and government...." The text contains numerous watercolors depicting village life, religious ceremonies, and warfare among the Indians, and portrays several scenes of Indians practicing cannibalism. Although some ritual cannibalism did exist in Mexico during the pre-Columbian period, it was much exaggerated by early chroniclers who relied on oral accounts told by Indians who had lived during the period before the Spanish settled Mexico.
