Reenactments of plays brought by missionaries to Tumacácori, Tumacácori National Historical Park, 1937.
Summary
Exact date unknown but the photos in this series are from 1937. These photos depict reenactments of the 'Passion Play' held at Tumacácori during holy week, called Semana Santa, from 1900 to 1929. These particular photos were taken of the play when it was revived from 1937-1938 by Mexican neighbors. History: Missionaries who came to the New World brought with them the plays that had spread so wildly in Europe. Today, in Mexico and many countries to the south, these religious plays survive in many forms; the plays were reworked according to the particular traditions of the Indian tribes who adopted them.
