Rainbow over milo field (Sorghum bicolor), Nicodemus National Historic Site, 2015.

description

Summary

Also known as great millet, durra, jowari or just called milo, this grass originated in northern Africa but is now cultivated widely in troipcal and subtropical regions. It is the main dry farming grain grown in Nicodemus Township today and appears to have been an important crop early in the township's farming history. Imagine how difficult it must've been for farmers on the western plains of Kansas nearly 150 years ago. Their story is one of incredible hardship, determination and courage.
