PACIFIC OCEAN (Sep. 29, 2012) Quartermaster Seaman Apprentice Saray Calderin, from Patterson, N.J., and Quartermaster Seaman Apprentice Heather Braggs, from Nesbit, Miss., both temporarily assigned from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), measure the distance of two points on a map in the chart room aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Nimitz is underway to San Diego to embark Carrier Air Wing 11 as it prepares for a composite training unit exercise. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
