Persian Gulf (May. 07, 2005) Quartermaster 2nd Class Sherman Haylock assigned to the Navigation Department begins preparation for painting the U.S. Marine Corps Emblem on the island aboard the Nimitz class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as a tribute to the two Marine Corps aviators who recently made the ultimate sacrifice while flying a mission over Iraq. The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group is currently deployed to the Persian Gulf conducting operations in support of multi-national forces in Iraq. Vinson will end its deployment with a homeport shift to Norfolk, Va., and begin a three-year refuel and complex overhaul.
