Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), better known as Canaletto, was an Italian painter of city views of Venice. He also painted imaginary views, although the sometimes it is hard to say if his work depicts real view or the imaginary one. He was also a printmaker using the etching technique. In the period from 1746 to 1756 he was highly successful in England where he created many views of London. British merchant Joseph Smith collected a large collection of Canaletto's that was sold to King George III in 1762.
