Jacob Byerly (1807-1883) was born on 16 September 1807 in Frederick County, Maryland. Byerly was interested in art from an early age and became an accomplished painter and lithographer. He was introduced to the daguerreotype process in 1840 and quickly realised its potential as a commercial enterprise. In 1841 Byerly opened his first daguerreotype gallery in Baltimore, Maryland. His business was successful and he quickly gained a reputation for producing high quality images. Byerly's portraits were known for their clarity, detail and lifelike quality. Byerly continued to operate his gallery for over 40 years, expanding his business to include branches in other cities such as Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. He also experimented with new photographic processes and technologies such as the ambrotype and the carte de visite. Byerly's legacy as a pioneering daguerreotypist is still celebrated today. His work is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jacob Byerly died on 6 December 1883 in Baltimore, Maryland.
