At the second tower from the spectator is seen thesally-port. The front wall, which was stuccoed,with a flat face, is, as usual, demolished. Thereturns are rusticated in the same material. Theramparts communicate through the towers byarches. In the left corner is the lower part ofa battlement. PLATE XVIT. Here may be observed the arched door-way, con-ducting through the lower stories to the sally-port, by a stair-case constructed in that part ofthe tower which projected towards the city, soas to leave the communication free from ram-part to rampart. Three of the stone spouts,also, to convey the water from the latter, arevisible. None of the battlements remain entirein any part shown in these two views. 136 POMPEIANA, PLATE XVIII.
