Significance: It is one of the earliest railroad tunnels built in America. The Philadelphia & Reading Railroad made significant contributions to America's transportation history and the history of the anthracite coal industry. It was the largest corporation in the world. Moncure Robinson made significant contributions to the engineering and development of America's early railroads.
