Pelagic cormorants perched on rocky island, Kenai Fjords National Park, 2015.

description

Summary

Pelagic cormorants (Phalacrocora pelagicus) are often seen drying their wings while perched upon small, rocky islands between foraging expeditions to the coastal ocean floor. This is because, like all cormorants, their feathers are not actually waterproof! These sleek divers can reach at least 120' depth in search of a meal. They have relatively short wings due to their need for economical movement underwater. Consequently, they have the highest flight cost of any bird.
