Boats well in hand and in mid-stream, we now saw a turbid flood a halfmile wide, rolling through a channel leadingwestward, while south of it for miles, asheet of water slid swiftly over the ridgybank and slipped away through the arrow-weed and mesquite jungles, in the samedirection. Some distance from the river, the deltabegins to slope northward into the Sal tonbasin, the bottom of which lies 286 feetbelow sea-level, and which ordinarily,forms one of the most arid portions of theColorado desert.
