CITY GOVERNMENT. NEW YORK, THE METROPOLIS. CITY GOVERNMENT. THE corporation of New York, the city and county being identical, is composed of the Mayor, Aldermen,and Commonalty. This corporation has charge of all local administration, and although the Mayor, asexecutive, has had great power intrusted in him lately, the city is for more home rule and freedom from Statelegislative restriction. The legislative department of the city is vested in the Board of Aldermen, which,including a president and vice-president, consists of thirty-two members. The president receives a salary of$3,000 a year, and all the others $2,000 each, and they are elected for two years. The Comptroller, CorporationCounsel, Commissioner of Public Works, and the President of the Board of Commissioners of each departmentare entitled to participate in the discussions of the Board, but not to vote.
