Valery Carrick (1869–1943) is the son of a Scottish-born photographer, William Carrick, a pioneer of photography in Russia, and his translator wife, Alexandra Carrick née Markelova. He was a British subject, but spent most of his life in Russia. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1882 to 1886. He began to be known as an artist and graphic designer in the second half of the 1890s and exhibited his work from 1903 (Society of Russian Watercolorists). In 1905-1906, he contributed to the satirical newspapers The Scarecrow ("Жупел") and The Imp ("Леший"), and then became a correspondent for the Finance Bulletin ("Вестника финансов").
