This image shows the British merchant vessel NEPTUNIAN unloading oil drums for H C Sleigh and Company, possibly in March 1938. Two years later, the vessel was torpedoed by German submarine U-47 whilst transporting a cargo of 8500 tons of sugar. All 36 crew members lost their lives...This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars.
