The Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) including HNLMS JAVA, HNLMS EVERSTEN and HNLMS DE RUYTER arrived in Sydney on 3 October 1930. The ships berthed at the Oceanic Steamship Company wharf and Burns Philp and Company Wharf in West Circular Quay. The Sydney Morning Herald reported on the 'unfamiliar spectacle' of the Dutch squadron arrival...On 10 October, the squadron hosted a reception on board JAVA 'as a return for the hospitality they had received while in Sydney'. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that distinguished guests were greeted by the Dutch Consul-General P E Teppema, Madame Teppema and Rear-Admiral Kayser. Mrs Elsa Evans, wife of Rear-Admiral E R G R Evans of the Royal Australian Navy is photographed here, wearing ‘a frock of sand-coloured chiffon, covered with a satin coat of the same tone with a deep collar of beige fox. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. In September 1930, Rear-Admiral C C Kayser and his squadron of the Royal Netherlands Navy arrived, on board HNLMS JAVA, HNLMS EVERSTEN and HNLMS DE RUYTER, in Fremantle, Western Australia. The squadron then sailed to Adelaide on 19 September. On 3 October, the squadron continued their Australian tour and sailed into Sydney Harbour. Various receptions and functions were held in their honour, with reports appearing in The Sydney Morning Herald. On 10 October, the squadron hosted a reception on board JAVA 'as a return for the hospitality they had received while in Sydney'. The SMH reported that distinguished guests were greeted by the Dutch Consul-General Petrus Ephrem Teppema, Madame Carmen Delprat Teppema and Rear-Admiral Kayser. Sydney's socialites, including Miss Nancy Bavin and Miss Hilda Marks, graced the social pages of the SMH. Detailed descriptions of baku hats, chiffon dresses and fox furs were relayed, before the squadron departed Sydney for New Zealand the following day.
