"Portrait of Mr Thomas, Superintendant of Police, half-length to front, with head turned to look to left, wearing uniform."Joseph Sadler Thomas (? - 11 October 1841, Brazenose Street, Manchester), was parish constable of w:St Paul’s, Covent Garden (fl. 1815), the first Superintendent of F (Covent Garden) Division in the new Metropolitan Police (29 September 1829 to 22 July 1833) and an early Deputy Constable (i.e. second-in-command) of w:Manchester City Police (26 July 1833 to 1839). He is shown wearing the uniform of a Superintendent with elaborate collar embroidery.
