This photograph, which has a French press stamp, shows Arthur Balfour (1848-1930) and Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) sitting side by side on a park bench in the grounds at Versailles. They were both attending one of the Inter-Allied conferences which tried to foster co-operation between the sometimes conflicting interests of the Allies...Balfour, a Conservative politician, had been British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905, when the Liberals came to power.
