Mountain Dell Dam, Parley's Canyon, Northwest side of I-80, West of State Route 39, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, UT
Summary
Significance: Mountain Dell Dam is an early application of multiple-arch reinforced-concrete construction to dam engineering. The design developed by John S. Eastwood consisted of a series of arches set at an angle and so buttressed that increased loads served to increase the stability. Developed specifically for unstable bedrock conditions, the plan eliminated upward pressure, resisted overturning or sliding on its base, and offered ready facilities for inspection. One of nineteen multiple arch dams designed by Eastwood and built throughout the world, Mountain Dell represents a successful solution to a difficult and potentially dangerous engineering problem.
