Monument to SMC's Heritage
Summary
The Armillary Sphere catches the sunlight in the courtyard of the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, Calif., March 15, 2016. The steel and aluminum spherical sculpture, created in 1978 by local San Pedro artist, Jack Brogan, was commissioned by the Air Force Association to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Western Development Division. The WDD was established in 1954 to manage new and emerging missile programs which evolved into the Air Force space program. The inner rings of the monument represent the Earth, while the outer rings represent the tracks of orbiting SMC satellites. (U.S. Air Force photo by Sarah Corrice/RELEASED.)
