He is considered one of the most important portrait photographers of the 19th century.

He was a successful writer and journalist, and he wrote extensively about photography, art, and other topics. He was a passionate advocate for the rights of photographers, and he was one of the founding members of the Société française de photographie (French Photographic Society) He died in 1910.
