Max Adolf Peter Frey was born on April 16, 1874 in Mühlburg into the family of the merchant Heinrich Frey. Until 1904 the future artist lived in Karlsruhe and studied at the local school of applied arts. Then he worked for a while as a theater artist in Berlin and Mannheim. In 1893 and from 1895 to 1903 he studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Arts under Ferdinand Keller, Gustav Schönleber and Leopold von Kalkreuth. From 1907 Frei worked as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he taught classes in drawing, applied and landscape painting. In 1910 he was appointed professor. In the same year, together with his associates Josef Goller, Friedrich Heiser, Georg Jahn, Johann Walter-Kurau and others, the artist founded the "Grün-Weiß" group, whose first exhibition was held in the salon of Emil Richter. Three years later, the "Dresden Art Group 1913" arose, which included some members of the Grün-Weiß, including Frey.
