Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (Aug. 27, 2006) Master-at-Arms 1st Class James Blagg helps board up the doors of the base dive shop on board U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during preparations for Hurricane Ernesto. Although the first named storm of the Atlantic season, Ernesto was downgraded to a tropical storm prior to reaching the naval station, located on the southeastern coast of Cuba. The center of the storm passed as close as 20 nautical miles to the west of the station at its nearest point. Maximum sustained winds on station were recorded at 33 knots with gusts as high as 40 knots. Total rainfall on station attributed to the storm was 3.87 inches.
