Martiros Saryan (1880-1972) was an Armenian painter known for his colourful landscapes and depictions of everyday life in Armenia. He was born in Nor Nakhichevan, a city in the Russian Empire (now part of Azerbaijan), and studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Saryan's early works were influenced by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, but he later developed his own style, incorporating elements of Armenian folk art and traditional motifs. He travelled extensively throughout Armenia, painting its landscapes, people and cultural heritage. Saryan's work was highly regarded in the Soviet Union and he received numerous awards and honours during his lifetime. As well as painting, he was also a writer and art critic. Today his works can be found in museums and private collections around the world.
