Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Magazine, Plummer Road near Byrd Road, Vallejo, Solano County, CA
Summary
Significance: During the years between World Wars I and II, the most pronounced change in the ammunition depot was the expansion of magazines into new areas. First area was into the hills south of the golf course and the second was around the southern tip and along the west shore of Mare Island. The construction of new magazines during these interwar years falls into two phases, 1927 and 1931-1938. Building A156 was constructed in 1931, in a newly established area where magazines (A139, A140, A141) had been built in 1927. Located inside the fence, just south of A139, of the designated High Explosive Area that was guarded by the sentries stationed at Building A138 (1927, Guard Bunkhouse and Sentry Box). Building A156 was the first underground high explosive magazine built at Mare Island. The building is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District having excellent historical integrity with approximately 95% of the original building existing.
