description

Summary

Arabian Gulf (Jan. 01, 2004) Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Stan Proctor from Crofton, Md., inserts the calcium-fluoride crystal from a Thermal-Luminescent Dosimeter (TLD) into a TLD reader to record radiation exposure levels. TLDs are carried by approximately 1,200 Engineering and Reactor Department personnel aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), and measure exposure to radiation and the level of exposure of each TLD. Each TLD must be recorded monthly by the Reactor Laboratories division. The Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) is currently deployed conducting missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the continued war on terrorism. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
