Photo date unknown. Pictured: the first Euro-American woman to live permanently on San Juan Island and also the island's first paramedic. Toughened by crossing the Great Plains in a covered wagon at age 12, she was a compassionate nurse and midwife, delivering more than 500 babies while bearing 11 of her own! She also ventured out in any weather and to other islands to care for the sick and injured.
