Wally Moes's career as a painter began with a study in the special women's class of the Amsterdam Academy, led by August Allebé. During a subsequent stay in Paris with friend and society portraitist Thérèse Schwartze, she became acquainted with the realistic work of Jean-Francois Millet, which made a great impression on her. In 1886 Moes settled in Laren, where she mainly painted the Gooise peasant population, in order to expose the poor living conditions of this population group.
