"Long shot, rocky fields, hills slated cottages spare trees" is Lough Dan, County Wicklow
Summary
For a change we have an image from the Stereo Pairs Collection today with a rocky road surrounded by rocky fields and rocky walls in various states of repair. There is no indication where this might be though it does look to be "down the West" to me. What do you think?..For a while we thought perhaps that we had stumped the unstumpable. But, yet again, we found the community to be stump-proof. derangedlemur ( /photos/8468254@N02/ ) and others highlighted that the proximate images in the series (STP_0772 ( vtls000564089 ) , STP_0771 ( vtls000564090 ) , etc) all seemed to be in the Wicklow area (Glendalough, Laragh, etc). And, B-59 ( /photos/66311327@N05/ ) noted that the apparent reverse view (STP_0769 ( vtls000564087 ) ) showed a body of water. Ultimately, andymullane ( /photos/andrewomullane/ ) identified it as Lough Dan House ( http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,715523,702414,11,9 ) - with corroboration from O Mac ( /photos/91549360@N03/ ) and Salty Windows ( /photos/gerrydunne/ ) . Incredible work all - and particular thanks to andymullane ( /photos/andrewomullane/ ) !...Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton..Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence..Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883..NLI Ref: STP_0770 ( vtls000564088 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
