Letter from Sarah C. Rugg, Groton, [Massachusetts], to Anne Warren Weston, [1838] Feb[ruary] 18

Sarah C. Rugg writes to Anne Warren Weston in regards to receiving the petition from Dr. Amos Farnsworth. The whole care of circulating the petitions rest in her hands. She wants to see the Grimke sisters. Angelina is to address a committee from the legislature. She believes the Grimkes are doing a great work for the country by emancipating women. She writes, "I believe for this purpose the Lord hath rais'd them up, for this purpose he sustains them, not only to plead for the slave, but to rest on the waste places, the inroads that have been made upon the female character, in justice to them I shall call them repairers of the breach, restorers of paths to dwell in." They will be invited again to speak next spring beside "Mr. Phelps' pulpit." She writes of a revival of religion in Groton. Her anti-slavery society met and spent most of the time in prayer.
