Letter from S. Alfred Steinthal, Bridgewater, [England], to Samuel May, March 8th, 1854
Summary
Steinthal describes the first meetings of the recently formed Bridgewater Anti-Slavery Society. He mentions Parker Pillsbury's illness and asks May about the free labor debate. Steinthal says his Society avoided joining the Broad Street organization. He asks about the "National Demokrat," a German paper published in Washington, and the "New York Daily Times." Steinthal complains of the difficulty of understanding American politics and respectfully requests that May send books and periodicals pertaining to the anti-slavery cause.
