Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884) was a French photographer, painter and writer who is considered one of the most important figures in the early history of photography. He was born on 30 August 1820 in Villiers-le-Bel, France, and died on 30 July 1884 in Cairo, Egypt. Le Gray initially trained as a painter with the famous French painter Paul Delaroche. However, he became interested in photography in the 1840s and quickly gained recognition for his technical innovations and artistic contributions to the medium.
