Summary

Photographs show crowds at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the ceremony to mark the laying of the keel of the USS California (later renamed the USS New Mexico). Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels attended the ceremony which took place on Oct. 14, 1915. (New York Times, Oct. 15, 1915).
